Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in Cappadocia in 332 BC, and established the Kingdom of Cappadocia. The Roman metropolis of Cappadocia was Caesarea. The native Cappadocians may have originally been of Syrian stock.

Tourism The region is now a popular tourist destination, with many attractions including underground cities, rock-cut churches, and dwellings. Göreme National Park and other rock sites in the area are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
